Puno

Our Hotel was our third one in the Libertador group http://www.libertador.com.pe/eng/puno.php and a white monstrosity (but really nice) that was situated on a point quite a ways from town and any shopping. This meant that you were sort of limited in where you could eat. You ate either the hotel restaurant fare or your suitcase snacks.

The neat thing about Puno http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puno was the Lake Titicaca and the Uros Islands http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uros They are floating islands mostly maintained for the many many many boats that go out every day to visit them. Only a couple hundred actually still live on the islands (which were further away) so really we were just visiting really unique floating souvenir stands. Our boat stopped at one floating island that coordinated the boats activities to allow the tourist dollars to be spread around. One island provided instructions as to how the islands were built and the other one had dancers and a boat ride on a reed boat. And of course both islands had lots of souvenir items to sell. Did you notice that they use Solar Power. One of islands we went past had a house boat anchored to it. It belonged to the Church of Later Day Saints.
